Born in Newmarket in Q2-1889 [Newmarket 3b:538], the 3rd son of Alfred and Harriette HAYHOE (née ROGERS), of Palace House Stables, Palace Street, Newmarket.

1891 census...Alfred Charles [2] was at Palace House with his father Alfred [39] racehorse trainer born Malton, Yorks; his mother Harriette [40] born Newmarket and his sisters Millicent [12]; Ethel R [11]; Eleanor E [10]; Violet M [5] and Gertrude A [4], also brothers Henry A [8]; William [7] and an un-named brother [1 month]. All the children were born in Newmarket.

1901 census...Alfred C [12] was still at Palace House with his now widower father; sisters Millicent and Ethel and brothers Henry and Arthur (the unnamed brother in the 1891 census). His mother had died in 1896.

He attended Felsted School, near Braintree

1911 census...His father had retired, living at Exeter House, Exeter Road, Newmarket but so far Alfred Charles has not been found
Even his medal card refers to missing records. There was an Alfred Charles Hayhoe of the right age in the Army at Fareham, Hants but he gave his place of birth as Harwich and was in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

For his elder brother Henry, the Newmarket Journal of 19th October 1915 states:-
LIEUTENANT H. HAYHOE - The following appeared in the London Gazette of September 25th Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) Henry A.J. Hayhoe to be Sec.Lieut. Sept.7th 1915. Mr. H Hayhoe is the eldest son of Mr. Alfred Hayhoe, of Exeter House, Newmarket. He joined the A.V.C. in June and is now on active service in France, having been attached the the R.F.A. as sergeant.


He died in action at Longueval during the Battle of the Somme. From his battalion another 3 officers and 64 NCOs and men were killed this same day

No known grave - Alfred is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France - Ref:pier and face 2C
and also commemorated on the Roll of Honour in St Marys Church, Newmarket
also Sidcup Golf Club War memorial plaque.
